Distinguishing Features

  • Compared with Rhus toxicodendron: These two are opposites in modality. Bryonia is worse from any motion and better from rest and pressure. Rhus tox is worse from rest and better from continued motion.

  • Compared with Gelsemium: In flu-like states, both want to lie still. Gelsemium is thirstless, drowsy, and trembling, with heavy eyelids. Bryonia is very thirsty, drinks large amounts at long intervals, and is irritable.

  • Compared with Phosphorus: In chest complaints, Bryonia is better lying on the painful side. Phosphorus is worse lying on the left side and craves cold drinks.
